Portsmouth trains criticised

Sunday, March 14th 2010 09:37

Call for more investment for "sub-standard" rail service.

Plans for a new high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham have been criticised, by the leader of Portsmouth City Council.

The £30bn project would mean the 120 mile route could be covered in 46 minutes.

But councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson has told Coast News, that the line between Portsmouth and London is being unfairly overlooked: "Portsmouth to London is only 80 miles, but it still takes 11/2 hours minimum to do that journey.

It seems to me there needs to be some investment on the railways between London and Portsmouth as well."

Cllr Vernon-Jackson added: "Speeds on the Southampton to London line are much higher than the Portsmouth to London line, and they've got decent trains. I'm particularly worred about the sub-standard trains out of Portsmouth."
